Sanjay Singh of the AAP is not permitted to take an oath as a Rajya Sabha MP; Here’s Why

Imprisoned Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar refused to let Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh to take the oath of office on Monday, so he was not sworn in as a member of Parliament. According to Vice President Dhankhar, the Privileges Committee is now handling the situation.

Singh, who was removed from the Rajya Sabha on July 24 of last year for defying the chair’s orders, was put up by the AAP in January for a second term as an Upper House Member.

Singh had been detained by the anti-money laundering organization on October 4.

Earlier on Saturday, Singh was granted permission by the Rouse Avenue court to take an oath while being held as a Rajya Sabha MP. Sanjay Singh’s judicial detention was also extended by the court till February 17. Before the court, he was physically produced.

Singh was previously authorized to submit his candidacy for election and pick up his membership certificate from the returning officer.

His bail plea was denied by the court on December 22, noting that he was involved in “proceeds of crime to the extent of Rs 2 crore” and that the evidence against him was “genuine.” Last month, Singh was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Delhi without opposition for a second term.

The agency has claimed that Singh was instrumental in the development and execution of the now-canceled Delhi excise policy 2021–2022, which favored certain liquor producers, distributors, and retailers for financial gain. Singh is charged with collecting Rs 2 crore, which he claims were the profits of a predicate or planned offense involving purported corruption in the creation and implementation of the excise policy by the municipal administration.

Following a report by Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, the CBI filed a formal complaint alleging corruption, and the ED then began its probe. While the Aam Aadmi Party claims that its leaders were being targeted out of political resentment, Singh has refuted the accusations made against him.
