SC orders Maha Govt to reimburse former Siddharth Law College vice principal for unpaid salary arrears

MUMBAI: Chitra Salunke, the former vice principal of Siddharth College of Law in Mumbai, has been ordered by the Supreme Court to get her overdue salary from the Maharashtra government.
On March 15, after hearings from senior lawyers C. U. Singh for Salunke and Rahul Chitnis alongside Siddharth Dharmadhikari for the state, the panel of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and Prashant Kumar Mishra issued the verdict.

According to Singh, Salunke was restricting her ability to pursue her claim for the unpaid income she earned while serving as vice principal of the Siddharth College of Law in Mumbai. The petitioner further said that she did not want to pursue any more claims for a pension or other final benefits.
According to an affidavit submitted by the state, she submitted her resignation on March 31, 2014, and her services as vice principal of Siddharth Law College in Mumbai were resumed on March 28, 2014.
Although the State claimed that when she was appointed as a college teacher, the authorities “did not follow the regular selection procedure,” the “fact remains that the Petitioner has worked as Vice Principal of Siddharth College of Law, Mumbai, without payment, for the period for which the Petitioner is claiming dues or arrears of salary,” the State said.
According to the SC, the state’s allegations “indicate that the authorities acknowledge that the petitioner had held the position of vice principal and that her salary remained unpaid during the relevant period.” The Supreme Court then said, “In light of this, we think it appropriate to order the state authorities to pay the petitioner’s outstanding salary arrears from her time as vice principal of the Siddharth College of Law in Mumbai.” Do what has to be done in three months from now.”
