SIT Report On Madrassas In Azamgarh: HC Refuses To Overturn

The Allahabad High Court declined to overturn a SIT report from last year that said 219 of the 313 madrassas in the Azamgarh area were merely on paper and that a FIR should be filed in this respect.

On Wednesday, Justice Kshitij Shailendra rejected the plea submitted by two madrassas.

These madrassas allegedly took advantage of a modernization program that provided instructors and financial aid to madrassas even if they only existed on paper.

“SIT was constituted in the state to examine various complaints against madrassas,” the state government attorney said. On November 30, 2022, it submitted a report that was presented to a committee led by the chief secretary at a meeting on December 19, 2022. Various actions were suggested against various madrassas, including filing a FIR under Sections 409, 420, 467, 468, and 471 of the IPC against the madrassas’ office holders.

The petitioners argued that the madrassa authorities were never given the chance to take part in the SIT’s inquiry, before the resolution of December 19, 2022 was passed, or before the SIT report was accepted.
