Somali pirates’ attempt to seize ships is thwarted by the Indian Navy

Officials stated on Saturday that the Indian Navy swiftly seized a commercial vessel on Friday that the Somali pirates had turned into a mothership with the intention of taking over in the high seas off the east coast of Somalia.

By intercepting the former MV Ruen, the Indian military claimed on Saturday to have foiled “plans of Somali pirates to hijack ships plying through the region.”

According to the Navy, the Merchant Vessel MV Ruen is the same one that Somali pirates took over on December 14, 23. It was believed to have set out as a pirate ship with the intention of engaging in high seas piracy.

On March 15, 2024, a warship of the Indian Navy stopped the vessel, but the pirates inside “opened fire on the warship.”

“The pirates onboard the vessel have been called upon to surrender and release the vessel and any civilians they may be holding against their will,” the Navy said in a statement.

“The Indian Navy remains committed to maritime security and safety of seafarers in the region,” it said.

As previously reported by this site, on December 14, 2023, the MV Ruen, carrying eighteen seamen, sent out a distress call, indicating that six pirates had boarded the ship.

The first to arrive was the Indian Navy. The seized ship was heading toward the Somali coast, so the Navy sent out its P8i maritime patrol aircraft to follow its movements. The Indian Navy redirected its warship from the Gulf of Aden when the aircraft found the vessel, and the stolen ship was apprehended early on December 16.

Subsequently, on Monday, the Indian Navy assisted in the evacuation of a wounded crew member from the commercial vessel MV Ruen, which was taken over by pirates in the Arabian Sea and flew the flag of Malta.

The hijackers forced the commercial ship into Somali seas.
