State and jailer penalized for violating the rights of Elgar prisoner

Mumbai: Arun Ferreira, an undertrial in the Elgar Parishad case, has been ordered by the state’s additional chief secretary (home) and Taloja jail superintendent to pay Rs 2 lakh in compensation. Ferreira’s fundamental rights as a prisoner were violated when he failed to forward his letter to his mother, according to Vijay V. Singh.

Following the death of co-accused Fr. Stan Swamy, Ferreira sent a letter to his mother in July 2021 titled “Stan’s profound simplicity.”

Ferreira was disciplined by prison administrator Kaustubh Kurlekar for sending a letter that was considered a violation of the jail rules.
