The Telangana government is expected to build a cofferdam near Medigadda

To redirect water from the Godavari River during the Kharif season, the state government is probably going to build a cofferdam above the seventh pier of the Medigadda barrier.

In two to three days, the government hopes to get the preliminary assessment on the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme from the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA). Government sources said, “Once we receive the report, the chief minister will make the final decision on how to handle the damaged Medigadda barrage.”

Although there were rumors that the contracting company, L&T, had offered to fix the Medigadda barrage’s damaged piers on its own, the sources did neither corroborate or deny them. They went on to say that they will adhere to the NDSA’s recommendations in word and spirit.

When asked whether they would have contemplated offering L&T construction of the coffer dam during the design and implementation of the Medigadda barrage itself, the sources said that if the business was capable of doing so.

It will be remembered that during the last week of March, a team of experts from NDSA paid a second inspection to the Medigadda, Annaram, and Sundilla barrages. In October 2023, around six of the Medigadda barrage’s piers sustained damage. The state administration had sought for an interim report to be submitted prior to the start of the monsoon, even though the NDSA had instructed the expert committee to produce the report within four months.

Meanwhile, the opposition BRS said that the L&T offered to do repairs at its own expense as a result of former chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s efforts. “KCR’s tenacious work pays off. The BRS official account on X wrote on Wednesday, “L&T to repair the damaged barrage piers and construct a cofferdam at their own expense at Medigadda.” The official sources, however, declined to respond to the post.

Decision after the NDSA report

In two to three days, the administration hopes to get the preliminary NDSA report on KLIS. Government sources said, “The CM will make a final decision on how to handle the damaged Medigadda barrage once we receive the report.”
