Before the third ODI against New Zealand, Jofra Archer attends England’s training session, raising prospects of a World Cup call-up

Jofra Archer participated in England’s training session at The Oval on Tuesday in preparation for the third One-Day International against New Zealand, maintaining the possibility that the fast bowler may go to the Cricket World Cup as a backup later this month.

Due to a stress fracture in his right elbow, Archer, a member of England’s World Cup-winning team in 2019, missed the whole summer and was not deemed healthy enough to make the tentative 15-man roster for the event in India.

However, given that his recuperation is going well, it’s possible that Archer will be selected as backup, joining the team in India and being accessible in case of injury during the World Cup.

As England finished getting ready for the third game of the series against New Zealand, the 28-year-old Archer joined the group in south London. His long run allowed him to bowl a lengthy session.

In order to create room for the newly available Archer, David Willey was dropped from England’s provisional World Cup roster in 2019. Willey said that his partner was in excellent rhythm when he re-joined the setup.

“Yes, he seems to be in excellent shape. I’m not sure of his current fitness level, but he’s bowling well today,” Willey added.

“Everyone is aware of his skill level, his potential, and the influence he can have on games. Therefore, the fact that he is almost or already fit is undoubtedly wonderful news.

Andrew Flintoff, the former captain of England, was also present at the nets and is still working with the group after making an unexpected comeback last week.

Following a horrific vehicle accident in December while filming for the TV program Top Gear, Flintoff had disappeared from the public eye. Rob Key, a friend and former teammate who now serves as the England and Wales Cricket Board’s managing director of men’s cricket, gave him the push he needed to become engaged.

The arrival of one of the nation’s most adored allrounders has excited Willey, who said: “He’s an icon of the game. I grew up watching him play, so having him here with us and all of his contributions to the game is wonderful.
