Violence: Congress in Haryana Mamman Khan, a Nuh MLA, is detained

Mamman Khan, a Congress lawmaker from Nuh, has been detained by the Haryana Police in connection with the violence that erupted throughout the city on July 31.The arrest was verified on Friday by Satish Kumar, the SIT’s chief and the Deputy Superintendent of Police for Ferozepur Jhirkha.

When asked whether the lawmaker had been arrested, he said, “Yes.”

Aftab Ahmed, a senior Congress legislator from Nuh, also verified Khan’s detention.

The Deputy Leader of the Congress Legislature Party in the Haryana Assembly said, “The police have informed us that he has been arrested.”

The Ferozepur Jhirka MLA was also taken into custody late yesterday night. He was identified as a suspect in a FIR filed after the communal riots.

The Haryana government had informed the High Court on Thursday that Khan was identified as an accused in a FIR filed after the Nuh violence, adding that the police also had phone records and other supporting evidence.

Deepak Sabharwal, the additional attorney general for Haryana, said the High Court that Khan was charged with a crime on September 4 after the prosecution’s case against him was reviewed. He subsequently told reporters on Thursday that there was “ample evidence” against him.

On July 31, crowds in Nuh assaulted a march headed by the Vishva Hindu Parishad. Six individuals died, the most of them during the assault. In an assault on a mosque in neighboring Gurugram, a cleric died.
