After winning the Asia Cup in 2023, can Team India overtake all other teams as the best team?

Rankings across formats were significantly impacted by India’s defeat by Bangladesh in the Asia Cup Super Four. India was rated No. 2 in the ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings going into the match against Bangladesh, only behind top-ranked Australia.

If Bangladesh had been lost and South Africa had won their ODI series against Australia, India would have had a great chance to take the top slot. However, despite South Africa defeating Australia by a score of 164 runs, India lost to Bangladesh in the Super Four match by a margin of only six runs.

As a result, India not only lost the opportunity to overtake Pakistan and Australia as the top team in the ODI rankings, but also fell to No. 3 with a rating of 114. Australia and Pakistan are ranked quite similarly, with Australia having a rating of 115.259 and Pakistan having a rating of 114.89, respectively.

India will still fall short of winning the No. 1 position even if Australia loses their last ODI against South Africa and India wins the Asia Cup, perhaps allowing Pakistan to overtake India for the top slot.

As India gets ready to welcome Australia in a three-match ODI series beginning on September 22, the race for the top spot in ODI cricket will continue. This series will determine which side will hold the coveted No. 1 ODI ranking in addition to serving as World Cup preparation.

The top of the ODI Team Rankings has seen significant changes recently, with India, Pakistan, and Australia all battling for dominance. After defeating Afghanistan 3-0 in a series, Pakistan temporarily held the top spot, however after losing the Asia Cup to India and Sri Lanka, they lost it. The rankings will continue to change based on how these teams perform in upcoming matches and series, ratcheting up the level of competitiveness in the cricketing globe.

In the most recent update, India is ranked first in both the T20I and Test rankings.
