Andros Townsend, a former Everton winger, joins Luton Town

Luton, a struggling Premier League team, has recruited former Everton winger Andros Townsend to a short-term deal.

Townsend joined promoted Luton until January after being released by Everton during the off-season.

The 32-year-old hasn’t participated in competitive action since March 2022 due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

“Luton is my neighborhood team. I have followed their development since I live 20 to 25 minutes away, and I thought it was fantastic for the club that they won promotion in the Championship Play-Off Final, Townsend remarked on Wednesday.

“I never thought I’d put on the Luton shirt, so it’s a huge honor to play again for this club in the Premier League and hopefully get help this club get as many points as we can and see where it takes us,” said the player. Townsend, who has 13 England caps, has previously spent time at Newcastle, Tottenham, and Crystal Palace.

Luton manager Rob Edwards thinks his 264 Premier League appearances and expertise might be essential to Luton’s prospects of escaping relegation.

After defeating Coventry in the Championship play-off final of the previous season, the Hatters are now competing in the top division for the first time since 1992.

Edwards said that if the player had played in the previous 18 months, they would not have been allowed to sign him. “Of course, he has had a difficult period with injury through no fault of his own,” Edwards added.

“His attitude has been outstanding, and he has been great. He is a modest, diligent person who we will gain from having at the practice field on a regular basis.

“Young players will look up to him and believe that he or she is the standard to which they should aspire. He’s been flawless.
