Buttler regains his title of “Jos the Boss” with his second IPL 2024 ton, behind only Virat Kohli overall

When Jos Buttler scored an undefeated century against the Royals, he showed signs of returning to his best. His subsequent 107 not out, which helped England’s star beat KKR, proved without a shadow of a doubt that he was back to his peak.

Buttler’s first score, a determined 107 not out off 60 balls, sent the Rajasthan Royals into an unprecedented chase of 224 runs at the Eden Gardens on Tuesday, their sixth victory in seven games.

With this, Buttler achieved his eighth century in the IPL, one more than the legendary Virat Kohli of the Royal Challengers Bengal. Interestingly, Buttler’s century have all contributed to wins.

It took Kohli 244 matches to reach eight hundred, whereas Buttler just needed 102 games to get seven hundred. Having surpassed Chris Gayle’s record of six, Buttler is the only top-tier foreign batsman to have achieved this.

Following Buttler’s 2021 IPL century, he went on an incredible four-century run in 2022, scoring 863 runs in total.

Buttler’s form had declined the year before, however, as he struggled to get into a routine in the first few games before rebounding magnificently against the Royals, scoring a century off only fifty-eight balls.

Building on this comeback, Buttler scored his first T20 century against KKR with a brilliant display that surpassed Sunil Narine’s previous record of a 49-ball 100.

Thinking back on his success, Buttler underlined the need for tenacity, citing RR’s Director of Cricket, Kumar Sangakkara, as inspiration for his confidence in himself. Buttler’s innings on Tuesday were praised as his most iconic IPL performance.

“The worst thing you can do is not fight and give your wicket away,” said Buttler. All he says to me, Sangakkara, is to remain there, and eventually things will pick up steam. Over the last five years, it has played a significant role in my act.”

With Buttler’s outstanding play, the Rajasthan Royals are making waves in the IPL 2024, breaking records and enthralling spectators with their unwavering quest for perfection.
