Frantzdy Pierrot’s injury-time goal lifts Haiti over Qatar 2-1 in the CONCACAF Gold Cup of 2023

In group B of the CONCACAF Gold Cup on Sunday, Frantzdy Pierrot’s late goal handed Haiti a 2-1 victory against Qatar.

In the first match on Saturday, Jamaica held the United States to a 1-1 draw, while in the other group A match on Sunday in Fort Lauderdale, Trinidad and Tobago beat St. Kitts and Nevis 3-0.

In Houston, Qatar, which was playing in the North and Central American regional competition as a guest team for the second time, grabbed the lead via Yusuf Abdurisag in the 20th minute.

In the ensuing commotion after Haiti’s Alexandre Pierre dropped a high cross, Mostafa Meshaal passed the ball back to Abdurisag, who curled it into the far corner.

On the cusp of halftime, the Caribbean nation’s side, which operates on a quarter of the budget of the 2022 World Cup hosts, equalized from the penalty spot.

Defender Tarek Salman’s extended arm was struck by Pierrot’s strike, and Duckens Nazon converted the next penalty kick with ease.

Haiti pressed forward in quest of a late winner after Derrick Etienne’s attempt struck the post, and they were rewarded late in stoppage time when Carnejy Antoine burst down the left and crossed for Pierrot, who scored the game’s winning goal.

The start of the all-Caribbean match at Inter Miami’s DRV PNK stadium was delayed due to South Florida’s severe rain, and the playing surface was still heavily soaked when Trinidad and St. Kitts entered the field.

Two minutes before halftime, Alvin Jones scored a well-executed goal by chesting down a lofted pass from Neveal Hackshaw and putting the ball in the back of the net.

In the 65th minute, Ajani Fortune scored a solo goal to increase the advantage. He dribbled past two players and fired from the outside of the box into the bottom corner.

Jameel Ible’s own goal, which he scored after turning in a low Levi Garcia cross, gave Trinidad a convincing victory.

Later on Sunday, Mexico faced Honduras in Group B.
