The 16-year-old national record in the men’s 10,000-meter event was broken by Asian Games bronze medalist Gulveer Singh, who finished second in his heat at The Ten in San Juan Capistrano, California.

The 25-year-old beat the previous national record of 28:02.89, which had been associated with Surendra Singh since 2008, by more than 20 seconds on Saturday, clocking 27 minutes, 41.81 seconds.

Gulveer’s run was insufficient to qualify for the Olympics, however, as he was more than 41 seconds off the Paris Games qualifying mark of 27:00.00.

With a time of 28:01.90, the second Indian competing in the heat, Kartik Kumar, placed eighth in the event and broke Surendra’s previous national record.

Parul Chaudhary, who ran 32:02.08 to finish in a dismal 20th place in the women’s 10,000m. She also failed to meet the Paris qualifying standard, which is set at 30:40.00.
