“His perseverance is paying off,” says DC’s hitting coach in the highest regard for Rishabh Pant

Pravin Amre, the batting coach for the Delhi Capitals, believes that the daring Rishabh Pant has shown with his brilliant performance against the Gujarat Titans that he is ready to go off in the forthcoming T20 World Cup.

After recovering from multiple injuries sustained in a horrific car accident in December 2022, Pant returned to competitive cricket one month later. On Wednesday, DC defeated GT by four runs in an IPL match, and Pant’s unbeaten 88 off 43 balls all but guaranteed his place as India’s first-choice wicketkeeper for the T20 World Cup.

After DC was down 44/3 in their crucial match, Skipper Pant and Axar Patel (66 off 43) put up a quick 113-run partnership off 68 balls to propel DC to 224/4.

“He (Pant) began with a two-week camp in Vizag; he arrived and made excellent preparations. I recall that as soon as he arrived at the airport for the Vizag camp, he hit the ground.

“He made sure to use every day despite being hungry. “It’s all about his hard work, and it’s paying him,” Amre said during the news conference after the game.

“It’s clear that a few solid hits gave him the confidence, and today we saw a very noteworthy knock. Finishing was crucial, and Rishabh proved to be in excellent condition as he managed to score 31 runs on his own against Mohit Sharma, a seasoned bowler.” Amre also gave Axar credit for seizing the chance after moving up to the No. 3 position.

It wasn’t fair since, as you may recall, Axar was the one who was hitting well the previous year and, this season, he batted in the last four to five overs. Thus, the main goal was to give it a go.

“Axar performed well, but his relationship with Rishabh was particularly noteworthy. We were also having trouble; in the powerplay, we managed just 46 runs or thereabouts while behind three wickets.

“Axar has shown and that (partnership) was the reason that we got 96 runs in the last 5 overs,” he said.

Speaking about the game, Amre said that Pant’s strong hitting in the last five overs was the decisive factor.

“It didn’t seem like we could reach 180 in the first half, but we were able to add 20 runs after that (44/3 in 5.4 overs). In the end, they were really close, but in this format, a win by one run is still a win for us.

Our goal was 180, but Rishabh batted well in the last five overs by himself because he was self-assured. Being an experienced bowler, Mohit had an impact when he scored 31 runs in the last over “, he said.

Sai Kishore, a GT spinner, concurred that Pant and Axar’s collaboration ultimately proved to be the difference.

“Pant and Axar played excellent bat. Rishabh made many of boundaries off good balls—not only sixes, but also fours.

“That got them the momentum and in the last 2 to 3 overs, we conceded more sixes than fours and that resulted in the game going out of hands,” Kishore said.
