‘Impact Player Provides Extra Cushion,’ Says Shubman Gill Following 12th 200+ Score in IPL 2024

Following Gujarat Titans (GT)’s narrow loss to Delhi Capitals (DC) in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday, captain Shubman Gill acknowledged that the impact Player contributes somewhat to the high scoring of the match by giving hitters an extra cushion to keep hitting the bowlers.

Delhi Capitals scored their 12th 200-plus total in the current IPL season with a 224/4 lead, while Gujarat Titans could only muster 220/8 in response.

Following GT’s four-run defeat, Gill said, “I think impact players have a bit of a role (in making the matches high scoring). Even if you lose extra wickets, extra cushion is there for the batters to keep going and it gives the license for the batters to keep going till the end.”

Gill believed that his team could have done better since GT bowlers let up a few more runs when Rishabh Pant and Axar Patel put together a 113-run partnership, allowing DC to rally despite their early dominance.

We first believed that we could limit them to around 200–210. In the final few overs, we handed up a few additional runs,” Gill said.

The benefit of pursuing, however, is that you are aware of your objectives. It’s a minor area that can be pursued. It becomes crucial to execute [for bowlers]. You have to carry out your plans, or your yorkers, if there is nothing in the wicket for the bowlers.

Shubman Gill said that losing a game that was so close was frustrating.

Although it was frustrating to lose in the end, everyone had excellent spirit. I thought we played some very nice cricket. Fantastic battle till the very end, and we never considered ourselves eliminated from the match,” the GT captain said.

“Go out and score runs; there’s no point in talking about plans when you’re chasing 224,” he said.
