In the 2024 IPL against CSK, Rohit Sharma’s century for the Mumbai Indians ties a 16-year-old record

On Sunday, April 14, Rohit Sharma became the second Mumbai Indians hitter to register a century in the IPL against the Chennai Super Kings, matching Sanath Jayasuriya’s 16-year-old record.

The captain of the Indian men’s cricket team, who is participating in the IPL 2024 as a pure hitter, helped the Hardik Pandya-led squad defeat CSK at the Mumbai Wankhede Stadium with a score of 105 runs from 63 balls. He was unable to assist the Mumbai-based team in defeating CSK, however.

Even with Rohit scoring 105, CSK was able to stave off the opposition and win the game by 20 runs. But Rohit’s century enabled him to tie the record set by the previous captain of Sri Lanka. On May 14, 2008, at Wankhede Stadium, 54-year-old Jayasuriya—who participated for MI in the 2008 Indian Premier League—scored 114 runs off of 48 balls against the MS Dhoni-led team.

He hit nine fours and eleven sixes in the game. In the IPL 2024 El Clasico on Sunday, Rohit, on the other hand, hammered 11 fours and five sixes for the Ambani-owned team.

Rohit set a new record by hitting his second century in the IPL. He is now the first and only hitter in the history of the Mumbai Indians to score two hundred in the IPL. In the game’s shortest format, Rohit became the first Indian cricket player to smash 500 or more sixes with his five sixes on Sunday.

After 432 games played, the 36-year-old has 502 maximums to his credit. In the T20s, Rohit’s century against CSK on Sunday was his ninth triple-digit total. In 151 Twenty20 internationals for India and one domestic match for Mumbai, he has five hundred to his credit.

With three T20 matches remaining, only Chris Gayle (22), Babar Azam (11), and Virat Kohli (9) have scored more triple digits than Rohit.

150 victories for CSK
The Chennai Super Kings became the second side after the Mumbai Indians to win 150 Twenty20 matches when they defeated them. MI has 151 victories.
