Nathan Lyon is ruled out with a calf strain for the remainder of the second test in the Ashes

After straining his right calf, Australia’s Nathan Lyon will be sidelined for the remainder of the second Ashes Test against England at Lord’s.

for tea on Thursday, Lyon was wounded as he ran for the ball. He secured England’s opening wicket.

The strain was described as “significant” by Cricket Australia in a statement released on Friday, the third day of play. How long he will be gone was not specified in the announcement.

After this encounter, “He will need a period of rehabilitation,” it said. At the end of the game, a decision will be taken on his availability for the rest of the series.

On Friday, Lyon arrived at Lord’s on crutches. After the Australia team huddled before the game started, England captain Ben Stokes gave Lyon a comforting pat on the pitch.

Due to Lyon’s injury, Australia is now down to three fast bowlers and Cameron Green, an all-arounder. Travis Head, Steve Smith, and Marnus Labuschagne are three of the alternatives for spin. Compared to Lyon’s 496 wickets, they have a total of 39.

Todd Murphy, 22, who made his debut on the tour of India in February and participated in all four Test matches, is Australia’s ready-made backup spinner. At an average of 25.21, he got 14 wickets, including Virat Kohli four times.

In the third Test, which begins next Thursday at Headingley, Murphy is ready to make his Ashes debut.

However, it would be a setback for Australia’s ambitions of taking the Ashes to England for the first time since 2001 if Lyon’s absence continued throughout the whole series.

Being the sixth person to play 100 straight Tests at Lord’s, he was thought to be nearly unbreakable. That timeline includes the last ten years, during which he has taken 420 more test wickets than any other player.

The seamers were able to quickly rotate because of Lyon’s ability to hold down one end for extended periods of time.

At Edgbaston last week, he not only set a team record with eight wickets, but he also displayed his batting prowess by partnering with Pat Cummins for an unbroken partnership of 55 that helped Australia reach the goal and win by two wickets.
