Rohit Sharma makes history against MI vs. CSK, becoming the first Indian to reach a significant T20 milestone

In the most anticipated IPL 2024 matchup between the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the Mumbai Indians, Rohit Sharma, the captain of India and a former captain of the Mumbai Indians, made history in the shortest format by becoming the first Indian cricketer to smash 500 T20 sixes on Sunday, April 14, at Wankhede Stadium.

After smashing his 43rd fifty in the IPL, Rohit became the fifth batter and first Indian to reach the milestone with a six off Ravindra Jadeja in the 11th over. In the previous game between the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), on the same day, KL Rahul scored 300 sixes in the format.

In T20 cricket, the most sixes

Chris Gayle (455 innings) in 1056

Kieron Pollard (586 innings) in 860
Andre Russell (420 innings) at 678
Colin Munro (409 innings) at 548
Rohit Sharma (419 innings) at 501

Indian players’ most sixes in Twenty20 cricket

Rohit Sharma, 502* (419 innings)
Virat Kohli (383–365 innings)
MS Dhoni (334 innings) at number 328
Suresh Raina (319 innings) at 325
KL Rahul (205 innings) at 300

In the MI vs. CSK match, Rohit also overtook Suresh Raina as the top run scorer, surpassing him with only five runs. After reaching 20 runs to tie Rohit earlier, MS Dhoni did so, but the opening batsman’s flawless century left everyone far behind. Since both clubs are five-time winners, their rivalry has only become more fierce over time. The teams have faced off often in the IPL and the now-defunct winners League T20.

Rohit Sharma (MI) scored 837 in 29 innings.
736, 32 innings, Suresh Raina (CSK)
732: In 33 innings, MS Dhoni of CSK
664: 33 innings from Ambati Rayudu (MI, CSK)
Kieron Pollard (MI) in 25 innings, scored 636.

Despite Rohit’s century, Matheesha Pathirana’s 4/28 figures proved to be the difference between the two teams, as he kept pegging the home team back with regular wickets and no other batter was able to support the former captain for the duration of the run-chase. As a result, the Mumbai Indians were unable to chase down 207 runs. With their fourth victory of the competition, Chennai Super Kings held onto their third-place finish in the standings.
