Romario of Brazil resumes training at 58

Sao Paulo: Nearly two decades after retiring from the game, Brazilian football star Romario returned to training on Thursday. It took him just a few minutes to demonstrate that he is still a prolific scorer.

As he trained with considerably younger players at the failing Rio de Janeiro club América, of which he is the president, the 1994 World Cup champion turned politician scored two goals. This year, América will compete in the Rio State second division championship. One of the former Barcelona star’s kids, Romarinho, is part of their team.

“Having the opportunity to play with my son is my biggest goal here,” a worn-out Romário said to reporters after the session. That’s a goal shared by many athletes. Next year, LeBron James hopes to play in the NBA alongside his kid. That was also Rivaldo’s opportunity. That’s what I also desire. AP
