World Cup of Archery: Four medals confirmed by archers, Deepika passes Korean test

In addition to compound archers continuing to impress to guarantee India a fourth medal in the World Cup Stage 1 here today, former world No. 1 Deepika Kumari defeated South Korean Jeon Hunyoung to blast into the quarterfinals.

In the women’s recurve solo quarterfinal, three-time Olympian Deepika (who is now ranked 142nd in the world) defeated Jeon 6-4 (27-28, 27-27, 29-28, 29-27, 28-28) after falling down early in the rankings round.

Deepika began the match with an eight and lost the first set 27-28, but the 29-year-old showed improvement as she evened the second set at 27-all and won the third (29-28) with only one point lost.

Deepika made it to the semifinals after drilling in four 10s, including two X (closer to center) from six arrows, after the score of three all.

If Deepika wants to earn her first World Cup individual gold medal since the June 2021 Paris Stage 3, she could need to defeat two more Korean opponents.

Deepika’s opponent in the semifinals is teenager Nam Suhyeon, who qualified as the seventh seed.

Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Abhishek Verma advanced to the compound mixed team final to start the day.

The world-ranked Indians defeated Lot Maximo Mendez Ortiz and Andrea Becerra of Mexico 155–151, conceding just five points in the process.

Tomorrow, they will compete for the gold medal against Estonia, who are rated lower. The women’s compound team, of which Jyothi is a part, advanced to the final on Wednesday.

The world No. 3 is aiming for a hat-trick of top podium results after clinching a position in the individual section quarterfinals on Thursday.

The Indians are vying for two medals in the compound individual events, where Jyothi and Priyansh have advanced to the semifinals. Overall, they have qualified for four finals, all in the team events.

The men’s recurve, women’s, mixed, and compound men’s events are the four in which the Indian teams have advanced to the gold medal round.

In the meanwhile, the top-seeded Korean pair of Lim and Kim Woojin defeated the fourth-seeded Indian recurve mixed combination of Ankita Bhakat and Dhiraj Bommadevara in straight sets, 0-6 (38-39, 35-36 36-38) in the quarterfinal. They will compete against Mexico for bronze. Other recurve archers were devastated when Tarundeep Rai lost to Andres Temino 3-7 (29-26 27-29 27-27 27-30 27-28), eliminating him from the quarterfinals.
