“You don’t play for the country, state,” a former cricket player from India said in reference to the Mumbai Indians’ new skipper

NEW DELHI: The Mumbai Indians will have a major leadership transition as the Indian Premier League (IPL) season approaches. Hardik Pandya will replace previous captain Rohit Sharma as captain of the five-time winners, with Sharma assuming the position of only hitter. This change in captaincy has sparked a heated discussion.
Former Indian cricket player Praveen Kumar, who has played for the Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Kings XI Punjab, was asked to comment on the Mumbai Indians’ choice to change captains in a video that went viral on social media.

Regarding Pandya’s appointment, Kumar voiced his worries, implying that it was a hastily made choice. He underlined how crucial it is for players to put their national and international cricket teams ahead of franchise competitions like the IPL.
“You don’t play for your state or nation in domestic cricket; instead, you participate in the IPL straight after becoming injured two months before the tournament. That’s not how the world works,” Kumar said, addressing the problem.

He continued by giving young players advice on how to reconcile their involvement in lucrative franchise leagues, such as the Indian Premier League with their obligations to international cricket. Kumar emphasized the value of serving one’s nation and state and advised against putting money before playing local and national cricket.
This is something I’ve been saying for a while. Okay, so what exactly is the purpose of this? Earn money, no one is preventing you. Paisa kamane chahiye lekin aise bhi nahi hona chahiye ki aap domestic nahi khel rahe, nation ko significance nahi de rahe. However, it shouldn’t come at the price of playing for your country and domestic cricket,” Kumar said, emphasizing the need for athletes to have a healthy work-life balance.
The Mumbai Indians’ choice to choose Hardik Pandya as their skipper is still causing controversy in the cricket world as the IPL 2024 season draws near. Though views may differ, Kumar’s comments provided insight into the larger discussion about player objectives and the place of franchise cricket in the contemporary game.
