Elections to the Uttar Pradesh Lok Sabha in 2024: The State Will Not Take “NOTA” Lightly

Uttar Pradesh’s voting environment has changed during the last ten years with the Election Commission’s implementation of the None of the Above (NOTA) option, and its effects are growing. The Election Commission’s adoption of the None of the Above (NOTA) option ten years ago has changed Uttar Pradesh’s political environment, and the effects of this change are becoming more apparent. Recent election data clearly illustrates NOTA’s growing power as voters utilize their freedom to reject any and all candidates.

Robertsganj, an Uttar Pradesh seat, had a considerable increase in NOTA votes during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, placing it in fourth place. Furthermore, a remarkable 10,830 people chose NOTA in the Machhilishahr Lok Sabha seat, where the difference between success and loss was just 181 votes, highlighting its importance as a deciding factor.

Year after year, there has been a clear pattern of increasing NOTA votes in all 13 Purvanchal seats. For example, the number of votes cast for NOTA in the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat increased from 2,051 in 2014 to 4,037 in 2019, which led to the loss of 22 candidates.

Similarly, NOTA received 9,615 votes to gain fourth place in Ballia, suggesting that voter dissatisfaction is on the rise.

Election Commission statistics indicate that in Uttar Pradesh, the percentage of voters who chose NOTA rose from 0.71% in the Lok Sabha elections of 2014 to 0.84% in 2019.

This change reflects citizens’ growing disillusionment with the political alternatives at their disposal. Nine Ballia candidates earned fewer votes than NOTA in the 2014 elections, indicating a notable rejection of established party candidates. In the constituency, NOTA garnered 6,670 votes, making it a strong challenger despite the presence of established parties and independents.

The changing role of NOTA is further shown by the election dynamics in Ballia. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, which had 53.3% voter participation and 15 contenders compete for the seat, Bharat Singh of the BJP won with 3,59,758 votes, while Neeraj Shekhar of the Samajwadi Party came in second with 2,20,324 votes.

The rising momentum of NOTA in the Uttar Pradesh elections indicates a growing need for improved representation and governance, which puts pressure on political parties to reflect and respond to public concerns. Nota is increasingly being seen as one of the factors that might influence an election due to its frequent invocation.
