In Greater Noida, 76 hostel residents are hospitalized after contracting food poisoning

Up to 76 pupils at a private dormitory in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, were hospitalized on Saturday after contracting food illness, according to authorities. The authorities said that the students’ food in the dormitory was prepared for those keeping the Mahashivratri fast.

The students, who are enrolled in several universities, had supper on Friday, according to the police, after which many of them complained of nausea, vertigo, and vomiting. On Friday, in honor of Mahashivratri, the students at the Aryan Residency, located in the Knowledge Park neighborhood, which is a center for education, enjoyed “puris” made of “kuttu ka atta” (buckwheat flour).

After around 76 pupils had supper and complained of having sick stomachs, the local police were called to the scene on Friday night. The pupils’ conditions are currently stable after being transferred to several hospitals, according to a statement from the police.

It also said that the occurrence does not raise a law and order problem, and the subject is being looked into. A crew from the nearby food safety agency raced to the scene to conduct an inspection in the meanwhile.

“The group will gather meal samples and the ingredients needed to make the supper. Legal action will be taken when the samples were examined, an official told PTI. Students said that since they were fasting, their meal was prepared separately for them.

“We ate supper at around nine thirty. At 10:30 p.m., I began to feel lightheaded and eventually fell asleep. After that, my classmates noted that many students were complaining of nausea, vertigo, and vomiting,” claimed Piyush, a student recovering in a private hospital.

“At midnight, I began to tremble and had heat and vertigo. I was then escorted to this emergency department along with two of my housemates. Another student named Kushal informed reporters at the Kailash Hospital, “Some others in my hostel were vomiting too.”
