A 14-pound newborn breaks the Canadian record, surprising the internet

The process of giving birth may be difficult and complicated, and it can sometimes put the unborn child and the expectant woman in danger. While underweight babies and preterm births are often the focus of worry, a Canadian couple faced an unexpected and concerning turn of events when their kid was born overweight—two times the normal weight of a newborn.

Sonny weighed an astounding 14 pounds, 8 ounces, or around 6.71 kilograms, when he came one week before his scheduled due date. This was a striking deviation from the 2.5–4 kg range that is usual for infant weight. Sonny was born on October 23 at Cambridge Memorial Hospital in Ontario, Canada, via cesarean section. This was a unique delivery. Sonny’s birth was a historic event, according to Dr. Asa Ahimbisibwe, since he is the biggest infant the hospital has ever documented.

“There was a drumroll when they put Sonny on the scale, and all the doctors and nurses were playing guessing games as to what the number would be,” as Sonny’s father Chance described the excitement in the delivery room. When the weight was eventually disclosed, everyone was cheering and rejoicing as if their team had won the Stanley Cup.”

Surprisingly, the Ayres family does not have any unusually huge infants. They also had four further children, two of whom were noticeably heavier than typical babies. At birth, their daughter Marigold weighed 13 pounds and 14 ounces, while their son Lucky weighed 13 pounds and 11 ounces. But Sonny surpasses them all and becomes the biggest of his siblings.

The mother, Brittany, said that her pregnancy had been uncomplicated, which further adds to the surprise of Sonny’s weight considering his early delivery. “Even the doctors were shocked when they saw how big my child was,” she said in response to the extraordinary event. It’s true that my father is tall. This surprised us, even though I am 6 feet 2 inches tall.”

Sonny was, according to Cambridge Memorial Hospital obstetrician and gynecologist Dr. Asa Ahimbisibwe, the biggest infant he had seen in his time there. Genetics plays a major factor in a baby’s birth weight, according to research by pediatric endocrinologists published in the Archives of Disease in Childhood – Foetal and Neonatal Edition.
