Technological Progress Or Employment Loss? Internet is Divided By Robotic Cleaners at Ahmedabad Airport

While it may seem like something out of a movie, major airports in India are starting to see more and more instances of robots cleaning airports. A user on X recently posted images of little robots mopping the flooring at the Ahmedabad airport. The images were captioned, “High-tech airport in Ahmedabad!” At the airport, I saw these intelligent cleaning robots.

I learned that they can discreetly cover an astounding 13,000 square feet each hour for eight hours on a single battery! There are four of these robots (made in India), two in the international terminal and two at the domestic terminal.

The X user said in a subsequent post that Peppermint Robotics, a Pune-based business, manufactured these airport cleaning robots. Peppermint Robotics offers “Intelligent Cleaning and Material Handling robots for Industrial and Commercial spaces,” according to their X profile.

An X user reminisced about meeting the Peppermint Robotics creator in a comment on the aforementioned page, stating, “I met with a Peppermint startup founder in IIT-B.” Airports in Dubai were using his devices at the time. These amazing AI-powered robots are also accepted in good Indian airports.

There were also predictions that additional duties at airports will soon be mechanized and performed by specialized robots. “Robo cleaners is just the beginning; as time progresses we will have robo baggage handlers and at the rate of tech development, there may even be automated flights without any pilots,” an X user pointed out.

“Dear Mr. Kumar, thank you for the kind words,” was the response from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport to the post. Our first goal is to ensure the health, safety, and cleanliness of every passenger, and we’ll keep using the newest technologies to do this. I’ll always wish you well. Group SVPIA.

Although many were thrilled by the cleaning robots, others contended that the extensive usage of robots would result in job losses for the janitorial crew and ultimately in unemployment. “Bad for the economy and common people as it is eating jobs of hardworking cleaning staff,” said a user on X.

“I know this is an absurd thing to say, but we don’t need this,” commented a second commenter. Being tech-savvy is great; I like modernity and technology. When they become really intelligent, the only concern will be losing one’s job. We are a nation of over 130cr. There will be more employment losses than gains! A Catch-22 circumstance!

The Peppermint Robotics SD-45 model is a completely autonomous robotic floor scrubber dryer that is used at the Ahmedabad airport. With capabilities that prevent collisions and identify obstacles, it is designed to operate in commercial and industrial floor cleaning environments, providing 360-degree safety.
