What Amount Is Too Much? The cost of two hamburgers, fries, and soda at this Swiss hotel is $100

What is the limit of excess? Exorbitant restaurant meal costs often cause a stir on social media and start online debates. In a related incident, two Australian visitors who were lodging in the Swiss resort of Grindelwald in the Bernese Alps were shocked to see their bill: an astounding $100 (about Rs 8,329) for two burgers, fries, and a single Coke.

Maria Antoniou and her boyfriend Anthony expressed their utter amazement and horror to a media source. “We thought there was an error,” Maria said to the publication. The couple reflected on their trip and admitted that, based on their previous study, they had expected Switzerland to have expensive costs. But Maria said it was even more shocking to see the outrageous costs up close. She said in an interview with news.com.au that while they didn’t do a lot of shopping in Switzerland, they thought the cost of food was quite high.

“We didn’t really shop in Switzerland, so I can’t speak on that, but all the food was excessive in price,” she said. “If I was in Australia and got told two burgers were $150 (USD 98.47) I would have walked out,” she said.

Maria clarified that the outrageous costs did not apply just to their accommodation. “We found the street food to be a similar price, unless you were buying from the grocer, which many people were,” she said to the publication.

The pair discovered that Grindelwald, Switzerland, was the most costly place they visited on their four-month trip, closely followed by Santorini, Greece. They maintained that Switzerland is still a place that travelers should visit, even with its expensive eating options.
“One of the most beautiful countries we’ve ever visited,” added Maria. “Switzerland is not well represented in any picture or movie. I’m eager to return with my companion. Just remember to always save,” she said.

The New York Post claims that when Maria posted about her experience on TikTok, other Australians were shocked to learn about the outrageous food costs in Switzerland. One lady said, “We got three large meals from Burger King and it was 210 Australian dollars.”
Another McDonald’s customer in Zurich, the biggest city in Switzerland, commented, “My Big Mac meal cost me $35.” One traveler said, “I paid $15 for a cup of noodles from my hostel gift shop.”
