What The Various Alphabets On A Tyre Mean, From Y To L

The majority of individuals who own and regularly drive a car will have bought tires and changed them in case of a puncture. However, are you aware that not every tire is the same? While certain tires are designed to run at high speeds, others are not designed to do so and may eventually fail. So how can we determine whether tires can go as fast as which? The writing on the tire itself holds the key to the solution.

Many people are unaware that each tire has an inscription on it that indicates its speed capability. This is crucial knowledge since driving a tire beyond its maximum speed limit puts pressure on the tire and increases the risk of a high-speed rupture, which may be disastrous. The letters L through Y on the outside of each tire represent its speed rating.

The National Crime Investigation Bureau (NCBI) headquarters released a chart recently that listed the letters on tires along with their corresponding speed limits. To avoid getting into a deadly accident, you need to be aware of them.

You may drive the car at a maximum speed of 300 kilometers per hour if your tire has the letter Y. Beyond this threshold, an explosion won’t occur. Likewise, maintain a maximum speed greater than 130 kmph if M is printed. The maximum speed is 140 kmph if the letter N is written; if the letter P is written, the automobile cannot be driven faster than 150 kmph. Should Q be inscribed on the tire, avoid exceeding 160 kmph as the maximum speed. The vehicle may reach a maximum speed of 240 kmph if V is written, 210 kmph if H is written, and 170 kmph if R is written. L stands for a 120 kmph maximum speed capability.
