Bihar: Former RJD Member Prabhunath Singh Receives Life Sentence in Double Murder Case from 1995

Prabhunath Singh, a former Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD) member of parliament, was found guilty of two murders in 1995 and was given a lifetime sentence by the Supreme Court on Friday. The most recent development, according to media accounts, happened after Singh was convicted guilty of killing two people because they reportedly voted against him in 1995.

This case was described by the supreme court as a “exceptionally painful episode of our criminal justice system” on Friday.

On August 18, Singh was found guilty of violating Sections 302 and 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) by a panel of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Abhay S. Oka, and Vikram Nath.

The Supreme Court ordered the Bihar government to provide Rs 10 lakh as an ex-gratia payment to the families of both victims in addition to the life sentence.

The case of the two murders
The double murder case in question occurred in 1995, when two persons were killed on the day of the assembly elections in Chapra, Bihar’s Saran district.

The highest court said that there was no question that Singh, a multiple-term former MP from Maharajganj, Bihar, was involved in doing all in his power to “wipe out” the evidence against him when it found him guilty and sentenced him to prison.

Ex-MP Prabhunath Singh
In the 12th, 13th, and 14th Lok Sabha, the former RJD MP Prabhunath Singh served as a representative for the Masrakh Assembly seat from 1985 to 1995 and the Maharajganj Lok Sabha seat in Bihar from 1998 to 2009.

Singh won the byelection back in 2013 and served as a member of parliament till 2014.
