Bihar Police devises a strategy to combat “celebrity firing” at weddings

The Bihar Police have developed a scheme requesting that everyone notify their local police stations about any marriage going place in the family in an effort to curb celebratory gunfire in the state, which often occurs during weddings.
“It has been noted that celebratory gunfire in the state has resulted in a number of fatalities and injuries. As a result, we have requested that everyone in the state, including proprietors of wedding grounds, banquet halls, and dharmshalas, notify the local police of every marriage, according to ADGP Law and Order Sanjay Singh.

Owners of wedding grounds, banquet halls, and dharamshalas must uphold security standards, including CCTV cameras in every room, under the new regulations. According to Singh, anyone planning weddings at their homes must also notify the police, submit a list of the licenced weapons they own, and also provide a list of the visitors to the neighbourhood police station.

It has been noted that at wedding ceremonies, birthday celebrations, marriage anniversary celebrations, etc., individuals would expel fireworks in the air out of excitement.

The ADGP said that “unnecessary firing is a criminal offence and offenders are subject to action and jail terms.”

“In 2022, we recorded 99 instances of celebratory gunfire, resulting in 8 fatalities and 36 injuries. We have confiscated 18 guns and revoked 8 licences to possess weapons. 9 people lost their lives in such shootings between May 1 and May 31, 2023, while 13 others were wounded. In conjunction with this, we have detained 72 people and recovered 3 firearms,” he said.
