One of the most sacred months of the year, Sawan is the fifth month of the Hindu lunar calendar, or “Vikram Samvat.” Millions of Hindus in India and other areas of the globe observe this week as one of spiritual devotion, fasting, and joy. Sawan often occurs in July and August, just before India’s monsoon season begins.

Sawan will begin on July 4 and go until August 31 this year. After 19 years, there will be eight Sawan Mondays or Sawan Somwars instead of the regular four each year. The month will be 59 days long.
