Microsoft and ChatGPT creator OpenAI have planned ‘Stargate,’ a $100 billion AI supercomputer
According to a story by The Information, Microsoft and OpenAI are allegedly preparing a large data centre project that may cost up to $100 billion and include the creation of an artificial intelligence supercomputer known as “Stargate.”
Microsoft is reportedly providing funding for the initiative. The person with access to the preliminary cost estimates claims that the planned endeavours would surpass $105 billion, which would more than treble Microsoft’s capital spending on servers, facilities, and equipment in the previous year.
The corporations want to construct many facilities over the next six years, the biggest of which would be the purported supercomputer.
The project, which would cost 100 times as much as some of the largest data centres in existence today, is anticipated to be financed by Microsoft, according to The Information, which cited people participating in secret talks on the idea.
According to Microsoft insiders, Stargate might debut as early as 2028, while OpenAI’s next significant AI update is expected to come early next year. The Information cited two sources for the approximate $100 billion price: one who discussed it with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and another who saw some of Microsoft’s first cost projections.
According to Frank Shaw, a Microsoft representative, “we are always planning for the next generation of infrastructure innovations needed to continue pushing the frontier of AI capability,” his comment to The Information said.
The supercomputers, according to Altman and Microsoft staff, have been split into five stages, with Stargate being the fifth. Microsoft is now developing a fourth-phase, smaller supercomputer for OpenAI, with an intended deployment date of 2026.
The information claims that the two corporations are now in the midst of the third phase of the five-phase plan, with the acquisition of essential AI chips accounting for a substantial amount of the costs for the following two stages.
