Twitter Turns 17: A History of the Social Media Platform’s Development

Twitter was first created by Jack Dorsey and is currently owned by internet tycoon Elon Musk. Over time, the microblogging platform has developed a unique personality. Twitter has seen considerable changes since it was launched, including changes to the leadership and the character limit. On July 15, the platform will be one year old. Let’s take a look at how it has changed over time.

History

The podcasting company Odeo, which was created by Biz Stone, Evan Williams, and Noah Glass, served as the inspiration for Twitter. Biz, Evan, and Noah considered developing a rival software to Apple’s when it added podcasts to iTunes in 2005. A short messaging service (SMS) was first conceived by Jack Dorsey, an engineer at Odeo. After receiving clearance, Dorsey started working on the Twttr-inspired idea.

In March 2006, Jack Dorsey released the first message after months of work. The simple message of the famous tweet was “just setting up my twttr.”

Later that year, the platform’s users could sign up thanks to the introduction of the final version of the app by Biz Stone, Evan Williams, Noah Glass, and Jack Dorsey. When Twitter, Inc. was founded in 2007, Jack was named the organization’s first CEO.

Evolution
Chris Messina first proposed the hashtag idea in 2007. The concept was first rejected, but it soon gained popularity and was adopted by other social media sites in addition to Twitter.
As Twitter grew in popularity and attracted well-known figures in 2009, worries about fraudulent accounts started to surface. The business started using the verification tick to solve these problems.
The business has undergone a number of adjustments and added new features since its inception in order to improve the user experience.
They included a retweet tool and sponsored tweets.
Twitter offered direct messages (DM), Spaces and Fleets, a feature akin to tales, to compete with other social media sites, however it was terminated due to a lack of user interest.
Under the direction of Jack Dorsey, Twitter’s original founder, a 140-character Tweet restriction was implemented.
The maximum length was raised to 280 characters as the business developed.
The app now enables up to 25,000 characters for customers who pay a subscription, however, after Elon Musk’s formal takeover.
