After “Scenes from a Marriage,” Jessica Chastain says her relationship with Oscar Isaac “has never been quite the same”

In a recent interview, Jessica Chastain discussed what it was like to work on the HBO limited series Scenes from a Marriage in 2021, in which she co-starred with Oscar Isaac. The project, which was based on Ingmar Bergman’s 1973 Swedish TV series, explored the relationship’s emotional journey between Jonathan Levy and Mira Phillips. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Chastain expressed her opinions, saying that the production was “very tough” and describing how her relationship with Isaac altered while the divorce drama was being made.

The actress said that she had enjoyed her most recent performances in Doll’s House, George & Tammy, and The Eyes of Tammy Faye. The HBO series proved difficult, however.

I adore Oscar, but the truth is that our friendship has never truly been the same, she remarked. We’ll be OK, but after that, I thought, “I need a little bit of a break.” In the series, there was a lot of “I love you, I hate you.” But I love what I get to do so much. Because I get to have these experiences, I believe I have the finest job in the whole world.

Although she often performs parts that are emotionally taxing, her real life is exactly the contrary. She lives a calm and tranquil existence separate from the drama that her on-screen characters experience. The connection between Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac started while they were both Juilliard students, and it was renewed when they worked together on the 2014 movie A Most Violent Year. Later, they collaborated on Scenes From a Marriage. Chastain won a Golden Globe nomination for the HBO series, while Isaac received Emmy, SAG, and Golden Globe nods.

Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain’s bond made headlines during the 2021 Venice Film Festival when Isaac playfully kissed Chastain’s armpit when the two were posing for pictures on the red carpet. When speaking to ET, Chastain joked about the situation.

We’ve known one other for more than 20 years, she added. He cracks jokes, and I admire him for it. I believe it became such a big deal because he is a male and I am a woman.

Funny comment from Oscar Isaac: Jessica Chastain “smelled like roses.”
