Ghilli box office receipts: Thalapathy Vijay film reaches 10Cr in India on a Monday that is exceptional

Ghilli (re-release) showed remarkable hold on its first working day yesterday, earning around Rs. 1.70 crore in Tamil Nadu—a meagre 50% decrease from its Sunday performance. In only three days, the movie’s total revenue in the state reached Rs. 9 crore, coming to a total of Rs. 10.25 crore countrywide. With this, Ghilli becomes one of the few movies this century to have made over Rs. 10 crore via a re-release, along with Titanic 3D (2012), Sholay 3D (2013), and Avatar (2023). It’s quite the company to have.

Rereleasing movies used to be a significant source of income, but as home media and satellite TV became more popular, this revenue stream began to decline. Re-releases have become more popular lately, especially in the Telugu cinema industry. These reissues are often scheduled to fall on the same day as a celebrity’s birthday or a movie’s anniversary, acting as joyful occasions for fans. Even though several Tamil movies followed suit, it wasn’t until Ghilli that a re-released movie attracted a lot of notice.

Every day from its debut until today, the Vijay-starring film has impressed. It started off well, put on a strong hold on the second day, and has now held up very well through Monday as well. Ghilli is unlike other recent South Indian re-releases, which were mostly one-day affairs with little collecting beyond their initial day.

It’s difficult to predict how long this will go on since this is a re-release rather than a standard release of a twenty-year-old movie. With the type of hold it had on Monday, one would anticipate a final gross in the region of Rs. 25–30 crore in Tamil Nadu if this were a regular release. It could still make it there, but we won’t know for sure for a few more days. Even then, the movie has already surpassed our expectations, so anything more is a welcome extra.
