Judi Dench remembers their first encounter with Pierce Brosnan

Veteran actress Judi Dencht, who debuted as a James Bond in 1995’s Golden Eye, reminisced about her first encounter with the “adorable” Pierce Brosnan.

Dench portrayed ‘M,’ the Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service, in the film. She would go on to play this character in all of the James Bond films that followed, up until Spectre in 2015. Dench couldn’t help but notice her co-star Brosnan’s attractive looks when she saw him on the Golden Eye set.

When questioned about the James Bond icon, she said, “Be still, beating heart,” and clasped her hands over her chest. “He was just an adorable man,” she said. He was a pleasure to work with and a wonderful guy.

On the first day of filming the James Bond movie, Dench and Brosnan were both anxious. “It was also my first day on Bond, the day he started. However, he was Bond! I believe that we were both somewhat jittery.

Dench also remembers a day she spent on the site with her daughter Finty. “As Pierce was entering my dressing room, she left. She mimed her eyes shooting out of her skull, like a cartoon character. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen,” she remarks.

Since Dench only visited the location to film her parts, she wasn’t always able to see the action as it was happening during the Bond film shoots. This is not the same as what she does on stage. She would often watch the remainder of the act from the wings when the Royal Shakespeare Company performed at the storied Old Vic, simply to experience the thrill of being on stage in front of an audience.

“I would go in, maybe spend the day filming for Bond, but I wouldn’t be involved in the rest of it.” Shakespeare: The Man Who Pays the Rent, a new book co-authored by Dench, was recalled.
