Screenings of “Kerala story” are “misguided propaganda:” Intellectuals promote interfaith harmony and cohabitation

A group of intellectuals has protested the Christian church’s showing of the movie “Kerala Story” for young believers, which the organizers said was an effort to “create awareness.”

“It is regrettable that a movie produced as a political propaganda tool and with minimal regard for actual facts is being shown by a particular segment of Christian churches; causing anxieties about an approaching intercommunity rift that too concerning a matter denied by the Central Government as non-existent,” the intellectuals stated in a joint statement.

The Ministry of Home Affairs responded to a query in the Lok Sabha on February 4, 2020, stating unequivocally that “no such Love Jihad has been reported by any of the central agencies.” The intellectuals cited this statement.

The Christian church was also warned not to succumb to such “vulgar propaganda,” which has the potential to disturb the long-standing equilibrium within the society and have an adverse effect on peaceful interreligious and interfaith coexistence. Among the 46 intellectuals who signed the petition were former ambassador K P Fabian, former Planning Commission member Dr. N J Kurian, and authors Sara Joseph, M N Karassery, and Arundhati Roy.
