The largest set I have ever constructed is this one: ‘Heeramandi’ with Sanjay Leela Bhansali

In an interview with Architectural Digest, Sanjay Leela Bhansali spoke candidly about the lavish sets he created for his television series, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. He described it as the largest set he had ever constructed.

Constructed in Mumbai, the film city, the set took around seven months to complete, requiring more than 700 artisans to labor on it in order to fulfill Bhansali’s vision. To maintain the aesthetic of the era the series is set in, Bhansali has acquired certain furniture from museums.

“This is the biggest set I have made in my life where walls have been pushed way beyond what I thought,” Bhansali stated in reference to it. Consequently, I believe that as my filmmaking has developed, I have begun to love and comprehend more.”

But I never want to dictate,” he continued. What the viewers desire to see will be presented to them. Many times, individuals have complained that there is so much in my movies for them to observe that they first miss the main point of the scene.”

He is renowned for using vivid set designs to give his movies an epic sense. Examples of this are Padmaavat (2018) and Bajirao Mastani (2015). But this time, it goes above and beyond his previous creations.

Manisha Koirala’s portrayal of Mallikajaan’s Shahi Mahal is part of the Heeramandi set. Then there is Khwabgaah, which is Sonakshi Sinha’s portrayal of Fareedan’s quarters. In addition, the set includes hamman chambers, water fountains, and a white mosque.

Aditi Rao Hydari, Sanjeeda Shaikh, Sharmin Segal, and Richa Chadha are also featured in Heeramandi. Actors Fardeen Khan, Shekhar Suman, and his son Adhyayan Suman will also make their comebacks.
