Tovino Thomas’s popular Malayalam film “2018” will represent India at the 2024 Oscars

After the Telugu film industry, the Malayalam film industry is now making India proud, with Tovino Thomas’ superhit Malayalam film ‘2018’ chosen as India’s official entry to the Oscars in 2024. When it was first premiered in cinemas, the movie was a huge smash.

Filmmaker Girish Kasaravalli, head of the Film Federation of India (FFI) selection committee, made the announcement that “2018” had been chosen. He spoke about how the film’s subject matter—climate change and the difficulties individuals encounter in the face of constant social change—led to its selection. According to news agency PTI, a 16-member screening committee headed by Kasaravalli watched movies, as stated by FFI President Ravi Kottarakara.

The 22 films that were shown included “The Kerala Story” by Sudipto Sen, “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani” with Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, and “Mrs. Chatterjee vs. Norway” by Rani Mukherjee in Hindi, along with “Balagam” (Telugu), “Vaalvi,” “Baaplyok,” and “August 16, 1947” (Tamil). Finally, the super-popular movie “2018” by Tovino Thomas was picked out of the group.

Following the announcement that India will be represented at the Oscars in 2024, actor Kunchacko Boban said in an interview with India Today, “It’s a proud time for us. The picture shattered all records, and it was amazing to shoot for it. 2018 was praised by people all around the world and smashed several records. The fact that it captured the people’s feelings made it relevant to many. It was able to reach a larger audience since it is a true tale, according to Boban.

He continued by saying that the movie’s technical quality is equally as impressive as its plot. “It is a movie that merits the recognition. I’m now unable to convey my satisfaction. “The movie from 2018 deserves to be considered for the Oscars in 2024,” he remarked.

For those who were unaware, no other Indian movie has received an Oscar nomination for Best International Feature Film since Aamir Khan’s “Lagaan” in 2002.

India’s official submission for the Oscars the previous year was “Chhello Show,” but it was unable to enter the list of candidates. Even yet, Indian film made a big splash at the Oscars last year when RRR’s upbeat song “Naatu Naatu” won for Best Original Song and Guneet Monga-supported “The Elephant Whisperers” won for Best Documentary Short Subject.

Coming to ‘2018’ is a survival drama based on the devastating Kerala floods of 2018, which Jude Anthony Joseph directed. It quickly became the biggest grossing Malayalam movie of all time and features Tovino Thomas, Aparna Balamurali, Tanvi Ram, Kunchacko Boban, Asif Ali, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Narain, and Lal in prominent parts.
