Well-known Carnatic musician KG Jayan, 90, passes away from an illness associated to aging

Today, April 16, KG Jayan, a well-known Carnatic musician and vocalist, passed away in his Tripunithura, Ernakulam district, Kerala, residence. He was ninety years old. He had been undergoing therapy for age-related illnesses and dealing with several health issues for a while. Together with his late brother, KG Vijayan, KG Jayan created a number of captivating songs, including devotional music meant for Lord Ayyappa. They were the first songwriters to create and perform these kinds of songs. The song “Sree Sabareesa” from the album Thiruvabharanam features his voice. KG Jayan wrote the lyrics for the song as well.

This popular devotional song’s melody was likewise written by KG Jayan and KG Vijayan. For this song, singer KJ Yesudas provided the vocals. Their association with legends like KJ Yesudas solidified their position in the listeners’ hearts.

From the album Thiruvabharanam, Vol. 1, KG Jayan and KG Vijayan collaborated again on the song Sreekovil Nada Thurannu Song, which is dedicated to Lord Ayyappa.

KG Jayan received several honors for his musical efforts, including the Harivarasanam Award and the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award. The Travancore Devaswom Board and the Keralan government jointly established this prize. The fourth-highest civilian honor in the nation, the Padma Shri, was given to KG Jayan by the Union government in 2019. According to the rumors, on Wednesday, April 16, his last rites would take place. The composer of Sreekovil Nada Thurannu is survived by Biju K Jayan in addition to Manoj. A few years ago, Sarojini, his wife, died away.

Legendary vocalist KG Vijayan, who was also the brother of the great performer, passed away at the age of 53 after a heart attack. He was traveling to Dindigul, Tamil Nadu, to attend a performance at the Lord Ayyappa temple. Following his brother’s passing, KG Jayan made his musical debut at the Nagampadam Siva Temple in Kottayam, Kerala. The composer for Sreekovil Nada Thurannu, who had never performed without his brother, reportedly had an emotional moment. He finished the show, but for a year thereafter, he didn’t play in another concert.
