Singapore and Hong Kong Send Out Warnings About Spice Products

Cancer in Spices: Concerns have been raised about certain spice items from MDH and Everest in recent reports from Singapore’s and Hong Kong’s food authorities.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer has categorized ethylene oxide as a “Group 1 carcinogen,” and these findings show that it is present. Three spice products from MDH and one from Everest had ethylene oxide levels over allowable limits, according to the Centre for Food Safety (CFS) in Hong Kong. The CFS has ordered suppliers to stop selling certain items and has started recalls as a precaution.

Similar to this, Everest’s Fish Curry Masala has been recalled by the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) because of high ethylene oxide levels. Both regulatory agencies have recommended anyone with health concerns see a physician and cautioned against ingesting the impacted items. Although MDH and Everest Foods have not yet addressed the regulators’ allegations, it is imperative that you follow their recommendations in order to protect the safety of your customers.
