Martin Luther King Jr.’s youngest son, Dexter Scott King, passes away at age 62 after a battle with cancer

After battling prostate cancer, Dexter Scott King, the younger son of Coretta Scott King and Martin Luther King Jr., died away.

The 62-year-old son of civil rights icon Dexter King died unexpectedly on Monday at his California home after a battle with prostate cancer, according to the King Center in Atlanta, where Dexter King served as chairman.

Dexter, the third child of Dr. and Mrs. Coretta Scott King, was wed to Leah Weber King in 2013.

Leah Weber King said, “He transitioned peacefully in his sleep at home with me in Malibu,” in a statement issued by the King Center. “He gave it everything and battled this terrible disease until the end,” the speaker said. He overcame this obstacle with the same courage and strength as all of his other trials in life.

“I am deeply saddened to share that my brother, Dexter Scott King, has passed away,” said Martin Luther King III, the elder brother of King, in a statement. It’s horrible how quickly the shock hits. Finding the appropriate words in a situation like this is difficult. Please remember to pray for the King family as a whole, especially for Dexter’s wife, Leah Weber.

Words cannot explain the sorrow I feel at losing another brother, according to his sister Rev. Dr. Bernice A. King, CEO of The King Center. I’m hoping for the fortitude to get through this very trying moment.

“Heartbroken to hear that Dexter King left us this morning, but I was comforted by the knowledge he is reunited with his parents and sister,” the Rev. Al Sharpton said, expressing his profound regret.

Coretta Scott King, Dexter’s mother, died in 2006, and Yolanda Denise King, his sister, died in 2007.

According to spokespeople of the King Center, King was a graduate of Morehouse College and held the title of president of the King Estate in addition to serving as chairman of The King Center.

King’s career path has been intimately linked to his father’s influence. He was a co-author of “Growing Up King: An Intimate Memoir” and appeared in the 2002 movie “The Rosa Parks Story” as his father.

Dexter King was a childless man.

Along with several direct and extended family members, he is survived by his wife, Leah Weber King; his sister, Rev. Dr. Bernice A. King; his brother, Martin Luther King III; and his niece, Yolanda Renee King.

Information on a memorial service will be given later.

Concerning Dexter Scott King
He was named Dexter in honor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, where his father began his first pastoral position, after being born in Atlanta on January 30, 1961.

Dr. and Mrs. King’s second son was named Dexter King. His father was brutally killed in 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee when he was only seven years old.

Like his father, he grew up attending Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, the pastorate of which his grandfather had served. After graduating from Frederick Douglas High School, he participated actively in a number of school groups and football games. Following in his father’s footsteps, he subsequently continued his studies at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia.

The son of a legendary figure in the Civil Rights Movement took on the duty of maintaining the legacy left by his father, including the legal protection of his creative output. His life’s work has been devoted to upholding his father’s legacy and protecting the intellectual property (IP) he left behind.

He owes his profound knowledge of intellectual property law—including its administration and licensing—to his parents’ eternal memories and his unshakable dedication to their given task.

In addition to continuing his father’s civil rights legacy, King spent his whole life as an ardent vegan and an advocate for animal rights.

Who is the Wife of Dexter King?
In July 2013, he married his lifelong love and closest friend, Leah Weber, in a private ceremony. Mrs. Leah Weber King is a former broadcast journalist, consultant, and businesswoman who is originally from New Orleans. They created a life together that was full of love, support for one another, and everlasting adoration, just like Dexter’s parents had.
