Overturned is Maldives ex-Prez’s prison sentence

On Thursday, a high court in the Maldives reversed former president Abdulla Yameen’s 11-year prison sentence and requested that a lower court reopen the criminal case against him.

In December 2022, Yameen was found guilty of corruption and money laundering in connection with payments made to a private corporation for the granting of islands for the purpose of promoting tourism during his presidency.

Due to procedural flaws, the high court reversed the jail sentence and directed the lower court to reopen the bribery and money laundering proceedings. Yameen is also in court, facing further counts of bribery.

His party sponsored the “India Out” movement and supported President Mohamed Muizzu.
