A 7.2-magnitude earthquake shakes Xinjiang, China, and causes vibrations in certain areas of India

Late on Monday night, an earthquake with a Richter scale value of 7.2 struck southern Xinjiang, China, according to the National Centre for Seismology.

An earthquake’s depth of 80 kilometers was discovered.

“Earthquake of Magnitude:7.2, Occurred on 22-01-2024, 23:39:11 IST, Lat: 40.96 & Long: 78.30, Depth: 80 Km, Location: Southern Xinjiang, China,” the NCS said on X.

Other sections of India as well as the Delhi-NCR region felt the earthquake’s vibrations. More information is anticipated.

Notably, at least 131 people were killed by a 6.2-magnitude earthquake that struck China’s Gansu and neighboring Qinghai provinces one month before.

According to the Global Times, which cited Gansu authorities, 145,736 individuals were affected by the earthquake that resulted in more than 87,000 people being evacuated and relocated to safe areas, over 15,000 buildings collapsing, and 20,000 more structures suffering damage.
