Searches continue for survivors as an under-construction building in Kolkata falls, saving ten lives

An under-construction structure fell here late on Sunday night, resulting in the rescue of at least ten individuals, according to authorities.

Around midnight, the five-story building in the Garden Reach neighborhood of Hazari Mollah Bagan fell. Officials said on Monday that a search is under way to locate individuals who could be buried under the debris.

Vineet Goyal, the commissioner of police in Kolkata, visited the location and evaluated the rescue effort.

There were ambulances positioned there.

Locals were the first to arrive at the scene and said that before the structure collapsed, pieces of concrete had fallen out.

The structure fell with a loud noise, and a dense cloud of dust covered the neighborhood. They said that the heavily inhabited area’s shanties were struck by the falling debris.

“The under-construction structure crashed on the nearby shanties, despite the fact that no one lived there. We are concerned that a large number of people may still be buried under the debris,” a local person said.

West Bengal Assembly Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari wrote on X, saying, “I urge @chief_west, Secretary @HomeBengal, and @CPKolkata to immediately involve the West Bengal State Disaster Management Team for immediate rescue & relief.”

“I’m getting panicked calls about possible victims. Kindly send out any team—fire fighters, police, or any other team—that can assist in saving the victims,” he pleaded.

Adhikari also posted images from the scene of the building falling.
