Yemeni leader and UN representative discuss peace process

Rashad Al-Alimi, the head of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council (PLC), spoke with UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg on the current peace process in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia.

According to the official Saba news agency, Grundberg addressed Al-Alimi on the outcomes of his most recent conferences at the regional and global levels.

The UN representative emphasised Yemen’s current potential to begin a comprehensive political process that satisfies the aspirations of the Yemeni people, according to a report by the Saba news agency.

The political process’ top tasks are restoring state institutions, preserving security and stability, and forging a lasting peace, according to Grundberg.

Al-Alimi pledged to assist Grundberg’s efforts in conformity with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions. Al-Alimi also reaffirmed the PLC’s commitment to doing so.

Additionally, he emphasised the need of coordinating global efforts to reopen the way to peace and end the suffering of the Yemeni people.

According to the report, the Houthis were urged to immediately halt all hostilities and begin serious, inclusive discussions in order to secure a comprehensive political solution.

After the Houthi militia overthrew the government in Sanaa and gained control of several northern towns in 2014, Yemen has been locked in a protracted military battle.

Humanitarian catastrophes, including severe starvation, have been caused by the continuous war, which has claimed an unbelievable number of lives.
