‘Semicon India 2023’ will be launched by PM Modi in Gandhinagar, and top executives from Micron and Foxconn will participate

The ‘Semicon India 2023’ expo on the semiconductor sector will be opened on Friday at the Mahatma Mandir convention center in Gandhinagar by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is in Gujarat for a two-day visit. Participating firms include Foxconn, Micron, AMD, IBM, Marvell, Vedanta, LAM Research, NXP Semiconductors, STMicroelectronics, and others. The event will highlight India’s tremendous advancements in fostering a worldwide semiconductor manufacturing and design ecosystem.

The mega-event, which will include the Prime Minister and important actors from the semiconductor and technology industries, intends to provide insightful information on cutting-edge chip-making technologies and advances.

The conference’s topic, “Catalysing India’s Semiconductor Ecosystem,” will center on strategies to bring together international experts from the industry, academia, and research institutes, according to a release from the PMO.

At the occasion will also be Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Skill Development, and Entrepreneurship Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of External Affairs S. Jaishankar, and Minister of Electronics and IT, Railways, and Communication Ashwini Vaishnaw.

“Semicon India, a major national-level event, is expected to spur growth in the semiconductor sector via priceless networking opportunities, cutting-edge technology showcases, and profitable commercial opportunities. This event has enormous importance in determining the future of the semiconductor sector in Gujarat and India because of its strong emphasis on innovation, involvement, and development, according to an official release.

According to the statement, the exhibition’s primary objective is to inform visitors about the challenging manufacturing process for semiconductors and the outstanding advancements made in the sector’s developing field. Notably, during Prime Minister Modi’s recent trip to Washington, US President Joe Biden announced the opening of a cutting-edge semiconductor assembly, testing, marking, and packaging (ATMP) facility by Micron Technology Inc. in India.

Reputable figures from the semiconductor chip, display fab, chip design, and assembly sectors will come together to talk about the promising future of India. Bhupendra Patel, the chief minister of Gujarat, will be joined by Anil Agarwal, chairman of the Vedanta Group, Sanjay Mehrotra, president and CEO of Micron Technology, and Young Liu, chairman of Foxconn.

The Gujarati government is committed to fostering quick and inclusive development of the indigenous semiconductor chip manufacturing industry, as shown by the introduction of the Semiconductor Policy (2022–2027) as a strategic effort.

A major investment of USD 2.75 billion (about Rs 22,540 crore) would be required to establish Gujarat as the site of a semiconductor assembly and test facility, according to Micron, a renowned producer of computer storage chips.

After a successful inaugural edition in Bengaluru last year, the event’s second installment is being hosted in Gujarat.

Vedanta-Foxconn’s $1.54 billion semiconductor project was earlier awarded to Gujarat, but their joint venture broke up this year. The companies are reportedly going to compete for different projects.

According to an article in the Indian Express, Hindustan Semiconductors and Manufacturing Company (HSMC) planned to build a Rs 30,000 crore facility on 700 acres in Prantij in North Gujarat in 2008 at the Vibrant Gujarat summit.

The Government of India approved the construction of a Semiconductor Wafer Fabrication (FAB) manufacturing plant in Prantij at a price of Rs 29,013 crore in February 2014. This unit was supposed to be established by M/s HSMC Technologies India Pvt Ltd, ST Microelectronics, and Silterra Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. The state government provided the property, and the Center granted the required permissions, but the project was unable to proceed, it said.
