11 leaders will be elected to the Rajya Sabha without opposition, including S Jaishankar and Derek O’ Brien

S Jaishankar, the minister for external affairs, and Derek O’ Brien, the head of the TMC, are two of the 11 leaders who were chosen without opposition to the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

Jaishankar has already submitted his candidacy for the Gujarati city of Gandhinagar to the Rajya Sabha.

The timetable for the 10 Rajya Sabha seats in Goa, Gujarat, and West Bengal that will be up for election on July 24 was made public by the Election Commission.

10 members from Goa, Gujarat, and West Bengal are expected to retire in July and August, according to the Commission.

Derek O’Brien of West Bengal and S. Jaishankar of Gujarat are two among the lawmakers whose Rajya Sabha seats would become vacant as a result of their retirement.

The Election Commission had said that July 13 was the deadline for submitting nominations for the open Rajya Sabha seats.

Voter tallying took place on July 24.
In 2019, Jaishankar was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat and took the oath of office.

He received 104 votes, compared to Gaurav Pandya of the Congress, who received just 70.

After Union Ministers Amit Shah and Smriti Irani won recent elections to the Lok Sabha, the two seats from Gujarat became vacant.

The BJP now has 156 seats in the 182-seat Gujarat legislature.

Elections were also held for six Rajya Sabha seats in West Bengal due to the August 18 retirements of Derek O’Brien, Dola Sen, Pradip Bhattacharya, Sushmita Dev, Shanta Chhetri, and Sukhendu Sekhar Ray.
