2016 Narada sting case: Mathew Samuel is summoned to Kolkata by the CBI

Matthew Samuel, the mastermind of the 2016 Narada sting operation, received a notice from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday requesting that he appear in person at its headquarters here the next month.

The notification was sent out by CBI detectives in accordance with Section 160 of the Code for Criminal Procedure (CrPC).

According to the notification Samuel received from CBI Assistant Superintendent Risinamol K.C., he must show up in person at the organization’s Nizam Palace headquarters by 11 a.m. on April 4.

The case in which a police officer and many high-ranking Trinamool Congress officials were seen taking cash has reopened under the scrutiny of the CBI.

In September of last year, Samuel was called by the agency to Kolkata for questioning. But Samuel had already established three requirements for participating in the Kolkata investigation at that point.

The first requirement was that the central agency cover his travel expenses for both the up and down flights. The second requirement was that his stay in Kolkata during that time must be arranged and paid for by the central agency. The last requirement was that lodging in Kolkata ought to be close to the CBI headquarters.

The Narada recordings became public just before the 2016 West Bengal Assembly elections. Significant political upheaval was caused in the state, and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee once said that she would have refused seats to those featured in the sting recordings if she had known.
