2020 Delhi Riots: Court Clears Two Accused, Declares Charges ‘Not Proved At All’

Two persons were found not guilty in a case involving arson, assault, and dacoity that occurred during the riots in northeast Delhi in 2020. The court reasoned that the accusations were “not proved at all.”

Sonu, Ranjeet Singh, Virender, and Rohit were on trial for allegedly participating in a riotous crowd that set an autorickshaw on fire in Delhi’s Karawal Nagar on February 24, 2020, in addition to robbing the auto driver.

Sonu passed away during the trial, but Singh’s case was dismissed in January 2021.

“I conclude that the accusations made in this instance are completely unproven. Thus, defendants Virender and Rohit are exonerated of all allegations brought against them, according to a decision made on August 3 by Additional Sessions Judge Pulastya Pramachala.

He claimed that the event had been “established to be caused by an unlawful assembly, which was out on the road and indulged in riot, assault, and arson,” according to the complainant and car driver Monish.

The court made note that Monish was unable to identify either of the two defendants as members of the riotous throng in front of the court since he did not know any of them or recall their faces.

Therefore, the court said, “it cannot be asserted that the accused people herein were culpable for the occurrence, even if it is decided that the crowd, during the prevailing violence on February 24, 2020, was responsible for the alleged incident.

The accused individuals were the subject of a FIR filed by the Karawal Nagar police station under many sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including rioting, arson, and dacoity.
