A massive 25,000-ton girder was built to link Sea Link with Mumbai Coastal Road

The Bandra Worli Sea Link and the southbound lane of Mumbai Coastal Road are now connected by a large 25,000-ton girder that was successfully erected by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The accomplishment was announced in a statement by the civic organization.

At Worli, the 136-meter-long bow-string-arch-style girder was installed starting at 2 am and finished at 3:25 am. According to PTI, this technical achievement, which involves installation at sea, is the first of its kind in India.

The research states that the girder, measuring between 18 and 21 meters in width, would link the Bandra-Worli Sea Link to the 10.5-kilometer stretch of coastal road. Though it was not yet linked to the sea connection, the southbound corridor of the coastal road between Worli and Marine Lines opened for traffic on March 11 of this year.

Additionally, a second girder for the northern section of the beachfront road, approximately 143 meters long and 26 to 29 meters wide, has reached the port of Nhava Sheva. The article also said that its installation is planned for the end of May, once the first girder is launched.

“An additional 143 meters in length and 26 to 29 meters in width has arrived at Nhava Sheva port as part of the northern corridor of the coastal route; its opening is scheduled for the end of May. According to the PTI story, the BMC had previously said, “The transportation of the second girder will be planned after the launch of the first girder.”

The girders have been painted with anti-rust paint to shield them from the effects of humidity and salt. This protection ensures that there are no problems for fishing boats off the Worli coast.

“These girders, painted with anti-rust colours to protect them from saline water and humidity, are being installed to ensure fishing boats off the Worli coast do not face hassles,” according to the BMC.

The first-ever experiment in India was successful, and the BMC celebrated this accomplishment as a major turning point. “With the success of this first-of-its-kind experiment in India, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation added a new feather in its cap,” the press statement said.
